Reading the data

  1. Each row represents a municipal record. The same episode may generate records in several municipalities. Federal recognition follows a separate process.
  2. Reporting coverage, forms and institutional capacity changed over time. Rising record counts alone cannot establish that physical risk increased.
  3. The map uses 5,570 municipalities from IBGE’s 2022 boundaries. Points lie within each municipal polygon. They identify municipalities rather than disaster locations or intensities.
  4. The four groups follow the classifications in this data extract. The series is a snapshot of the version used for this demonstration and may change after revisions.
